This maple leaf brooch is centered by an old mine-cut diamond of circa 0.45 carats, with a estimated quality of H/VS. Its five leaves are set with 29 small rose-cut diamonds. All diamonds are set in open settings, allowing light to pass through the stones.

Like many Victorian jewels, this brooch originally could be worn in different ways. The brooch fitting can be screwed off, revealing a small screw fitting, which would have either been used to screw it on a larger jewel like a tiara, or included an extra fitting to wear it as a pendant or hairpin.

Traditionally, diamonds were set in silver to enhance their brilliance, while a gold back would prevent the silver from tarnishing and potentially staining skin or clothing. A previous owner clearly wanted this jewel to have a completely pale look, because the back and brooch fitting, which were originally rose gold, have a white gold plating.

The five-petalled maple leaf symbolizes balance, love, longevity, and abundance. It is also the national emblem of Canada, and appears on its flag.
